About the City of Mount Pleasant, Texas

Mount Pleasant as a rural commercial center of activity has grown and prospered over the past 100 years. The location is along primary transportation routes and a strong independent attitude of the population has furthered that growth. Today 32,000 people call Mount Pleasant and Titus County home. They work in what is the hub of a five-county region and a shopping/employment center for over 88,000 persons.

Transportation and its People built the community and today Transportation and its People keep the community moving forward. A strong entrepreneurial spirit encouraged early citizens to start businesses such as Pilgrim’s Pride, Priefert Manufacturing and Big Tex Trailer World along with countless other companies. These employers created the employment that brought the major retailers to the area. Those early innovators inspired the business-friendly cooperative spirit found in Mount Pleasant and Titus County today. They created a culture of looking forward and taking action for change when the change was needed.

Access to natural resources has also been a great factor in Mount Pleasant’s growth. Access to water brought the timber industry to the region and that industry thrives today harvesting both pine and hardwoods. Agriculture also thrived here due to rainfall and contributed to the success of Pilgrim’s Pride starting here and growing to one of the largest poultry producers in the country. Pilgrim’s, owned by JBS USA today, has distribution throughout the world and employs almost 4,000 persons in the region. Pipelines and refineries were brought to the Mount Pleasant area during the early days of the oil boom. The resulting skills and expertise from the oil industry contributed to the growth of the mining of lignite coal and the construction of coal-fired electric generators which today feed much of the state with reliable low-cost electric power. Metal fabrication has grown since the early 90s and today represents employment of over 1000 persons in the region. The name of Priefert Ranch Equipment is seen across the country and around the world at every agriculture event or rodeo. Utility trailers are also made here in the hundreds and shipped across the continent making Mount Pleasant the Utility Trailer Capital of the World.

Now the community is taking another step forward with their support of technology in the workplace. The community college and school system have partnered with MPEDC to develop the Manufacturing Technology Training Center. This center, training 200 persons today, stands ready to develop the entrepreneurial leaders of tomorrow and keep business strong in Mount Pleasant, Texas. The
